Having trouble finding the answer to a LaTeX question? The Visual LaTeX
FAQ is an innovative new search interface that presents over a hundred
typeset samples of frequently requested document formatting. Simply
click on a hyperlinked piece of text and the Visual LaTeX FAQ will send
your Web browser to the appropriate page in the UK TeX FAQ.

hyperlinks don't work

ciao
El Bandolero
Sure they do; fix your pdf reader.
Jim Hefferon
ftpmaint (at) tug.ctan.org
they don't work on this machine, either. using ar5.
i was too busy at work today to test it using ar7 on linux.
however, they work fine for me using ar7 on widnoze, just now (using
the terminal server at work).
somewhere or other, there is a warning that you need a recent acrobat
reader.

Which OS and PDF reader? I've tested the file with Acrobat 7.0 on Windows,
Acrobat Reader 5.0 and 7.0 on Linux, and Xpdf 3.0 on Linux and all of
those work for me.
Is your PDF reader configured to launch a Web browser? That is, do
any links to the Web in any document work? For example, if you
use hyperref, include a \url{http://www.ctan.org/}, and generate PDF,
do the hyperlinks in the resulting document work?

Does gv support hyperlinks to begin with? I didn't think that it did.
-- Scott
I have Adobe Reader 7.0.5. Here is what happens:
-- When I point to a green rectangle a popup box appears; if that
popup covers the cursor, it flickers on and off wildly so I can't
read it. When I move the cursor off the popup, it can be read, but
then a little url box apears that often covers the text in the popup.
When I click, I get that link in my browser. In this sense the
links work.
-- However, inside the popup is a circled arrow labeled "Options".
When I try to click that arrow, the cursor moves off the green
rectangle and the popup goes away so I never know what the options
are. In this sense the hyperlinks don't work.
Finally, I can overcome the first problem by sizing the document so
the popups stay off the rectangles, but then some things, like
punctuation, are so small I can't see the point of that particular
green rectangle. I have to point at it and read the popup. It would be
easier to just read the FAQ. Also some rectangles are then so small
that maneuvering the cursor to get the link is difficult.
Can my reader be fixed to remove these problems?

All I know is that some years ago it was a feature much desired for
gv. The gv manual offers no clue whether that feature was ever
incorporated.

In the case of the latest GSview for windows (v4.8): links within
documents are followed, but not web pages. I don't know about other
kinds of hyperlinks.

I have updated Acrobat Reader and now it works...
splendid idea!
thank you for your patience

wow! now i can see FAQ in completely new light!
i'm very interested in visualFAQ source code, if it is available!
congratulations, Zarko
I'm getting exactly the same problem. I just upgraded ny Acroreader to 7.0.5 which is
the latest for my Windows XP Pro service pack 2 so that I could look at this new FAQ.
> -- However, inside the popup is a circled arrow labeled "Options".
I can't click on options either. It just flashes wildly.
Maybe Javascript within PDF still has a way to go to be usable by everyone.
But as feedback I like the FAQ as this will help users who can see what they want to
do but may not know what to search for on the FAQ. The more the help for LaTeX the
better.

However, I remember that in my times of newbie I have lots of troubles
to find the information I wanted in the HELP files that come with the
distribution. I think that a better shipped help would be rather
necessary, since that present is not so much friendly. I know many
(beginner) users that even dont know that comp.text.tex or the FAQ
exist.

Then complain to the distributor of "the distribution".
It's not yet available but I might include it in the next release. Note
that you're likely to be disappointed: many of the typesetting examples
had to be formatted manually because the "correct" LaTeX code was either
difficult or impossible to get to work within hyperlinks (or, more
precisely, within TeX's LR mode).
-- Scott
I might include the source in the next release. However, package conflicts
and the limitations of TeX's LR mode imply that the source generally doesn't
use the various LaTeX packages and techniques the FAQ recommends. Links
to code examples, while a good idea, would therefore require a lot of
extra work to create.
-- Scott
indeed: it would appear that more source indications in the faq itself
would be more helpful.
fortunately, this is one of the avenues i'm already working on (there
are code snippets in all the recently created/updated answers). i've
also toyed with the idea of links to the companion examples, which
have the advantage of actually being usable as they stand.

that is good news! thank you in advance!
> Note that you're likely to be disappointed:
i don't believe in this, at list this be very educative to me. I like to
make something similar in my next "e-book". in it i like to give support
to "advancer" readers, i.e. links to more detail explanation in some
other source

well, Chines e say that "every travelling starts with first step" and
how i see, you already make more than one on it. so it is reasonable to
expect that in future many suggestion, improvements and new
possibilities will be available.
