  It could be in order to accommodate constructions like &lt;br&gt; \edef\abc#1{\ifnum\x=#1 \y\else\z\fi} &lt;br&gt; where #1 is expected to be a &amp;lt;number&amp;gt;. If you need \abc to be &lt;br&gt; completely expandable a \relax can be something to avoid. The space &lt;br&gt; is needed when the call is \abc{42}, but the input might also be &lt;br&gt; \abc{`*} and the space would creep in.

  With siunitx: &lt;br&gt; \documentclass{article} &lt;br&gt; \usepackage{siunitx} &lt;br&gt; \begin{document} &lt;br&gt; \SI{1000000}{\cubic\centi\metr e} &lt;br&gt; \end{document} &lt;br&gt; should do what you want out of the box (siunitx uses maths text by &lt;br&gt; default).

  Texers: &lt;br&gt; There are contexts where I need gnuwin32 tools within Auctex but the &lt;br&gt; scripts seem to be useable only in Linux or Cygwin. Are there any native &lt;br&gt; Windows equivalents to this egrep script?: &lt;br&gt; exec grep -E ${1+&amp;quot;$@&amp;quot;} &lt;br&gt; This was downloaded from the gnuwin32 sourceforge site but of course it &lt;br&gt; won&#39;t work on Windows 2000.

(there are some such sets for &lt;br&gt; cm and ec fonts, on ctan, but nothing one can just run and get what &lt;br&gt; you need for the font you want.) &lt;br&gt; however, nowadays, as we move towards opentype fonts, it seems silly

  eucch! &lt;br&gt; at a guess, it&#39;ll be because \@tmpa is defined at the start of the &lt;br&gt; macro call. since you&#39;re using \edef, the definition, once you get &lt;br&gt; it, will be really odd. for example, \@empty will have been replaced &lt;br&gt; by nothing at all (that&#39;s it&#39;s definition). so suppose \@tmpa had &lt;br&gt; previously been defined as X, we would see
