I have a small problem with bibtex. I made an own bst file using latex
makebst. The problem is however how it does handle the "von" part in
citation. I have apalike citations (something like "Johnson (1998)". I
have one citation to someone called "J. van Vliet". In Dutch (and so
in my document) that should be quoted in line as "Van Vliet
(2002)" (capitalized "von" part). In the bibliography however, there
should be "J. van Vliet, Journal of new sciences, 3, 4, 2002" (no
capital). I tried to tweak my bst a bit, but I don't seem to find how
that can be achieved.

Could anybody help me?

Assuming you're using natbib, it allows you to use a \Citet command
(note the uppercase 'C') which capitalizes the first letter of the
citation. This should do what you want, I think.

Here is one way: enter last name first, first name, then "von":

"Bechtolsheim, Stephan von"

In other cases in which you want the capital, use braces:

"Kent D. {Van Liere} and Riley E. Dunlap

Here is another example:

"M. L. Parry and O.F. Canziani and J. P. Palutikof and P. J. {van der
Linden} and C. E. Hanson"

Here is another example with "Jr.," which also causes problems:

{Deats, Jr., Paul}

or

"Riggs, Jr., Webster"

"Strunk, Jr., William and White, E. B."
