How out of date is Kopka and Daly with regard to the stuff about fonts?
The whole subject of fonts in LaTeX is quite complicated, but before I
try to understand it I want to get an idea of what the current (and
future) state of the art is. Could someone post here or point me to a
description, say in 20 paragraphs or less, including Knuth's original
stuff, NFSS, LaTeX2e, CD, CE, Cork and whatever else is necessary to
bring me up to date? Also, what actually happens when
\usepackage{times} is in effect and a discussion of bitmap vs.
non-bitmapped (i.e. Metafont-style vs. PostScript style) as well as what
happens when making PostScript files, printing PostScript files and
viewing PDF files would be appreciated.
