Hi all,

I am surprised nobody else has shouted their happiness here. TL 2012
is available, as I found out by optimistically invoking ?tlmg update
- --all? this morning (CET).

Thanks for the great work!

I had one error message though:

So did you upgrade from TL2011 to TL2012? AFAIK this is still not
recommended. The main reason is (again AFAIK) that updmap-sys now
supports per-tree updmap.cfg files. After upgrade from 11 to 12 there
remains a conflict between old and new updmap.cfg that might break the
system.

I'm not at all grounded in TL development but that's what I've read
along in the TL mailing list.

PS: I also wonder why tlmgr conducted the update at all. Did you fiddle
around with the release date in config files?

I've installed yesterday TL 2011 in my home on Ubuntu 12.04.

It lies in ~/texlive/2011

I'd like having TL 2012 put it in ~/texlive/2012
without having the need (has yesterday) to use a DVD.

What is the procedure to get it that way ?

Beware I've also a somehow "TL 2009" coming with automatic install of
LyX (at the time I've installed Xubuntu / Voyager).
However various PATHes are settled correctly, i believe, may be not the
one, if exist for texmf because yesterday I've seen xelatex writing some
/usr/local txmf files, not the one under HOME.

Notice I allready use, since yesterday, TL 2012 on another computer
running Mac OS X Lion, looks really great !

Instructions for net install can be found here:

You may want to wait another day or two until all CTAN mirrors received
the TL2012 release in tlnet.

OK, I'll wait one or two days, I'll like to download the iso file, i
think it's better than net install because I'm under WiFi...

The ISO images are not yet on CTAN (2011 images still there). Just check
when they will be released (soon, I expect).

My connection is pretty good, but far from perfect and netinst works
fine. I'd give netinst a try ;)

and you need a pretty stable connection to download it: for 2011, the
image is 2431731712 bytes, and the new version is likely to be a bit
bigger. do you often download 2.5 gbyte files? -- i certainly don't; i
leave it to the archive, and then install the files one by one.

Is it possible to do an upgrade from TeX Live 2011 to 2012?
Existing for that an instruction?

tlmgr update --all --self

seem to be enough on Unix?

I just tried it on a test laptop, seems to run ok.

Are there any dangers in doing so?

I think subitem 8 in

<http://www.tug.org/texlive/upgrade.html>

is specific for going from 2011 to 2012. The handling of the updmap.cfg
files is different now. After a simple "tlmgr update --self --all" there
might remain a conflict in that area. Depending on what you are doing
with your configuration this conflict might either strike or not.

I played it safe for my official system and went through it step by step.

(now it is very handy that all my PATH variable settings does not refer
to the 'year' part in the TL path, instead it refers to a softlink named
'current', thus switching is a breeze)

With respect to the step 9 I have the
following problem:

You don't have permission to change the installation in any way,
specifically, the directory /usr/local/texlive/2012/tlpkg/ is not writable.
Please run this program as administrator, or contact your local admin.

I have carried out:
chmod u+rwx /usr/local/texlive/2012/tlpkg/
It was no improvement.

You will need the sudo command in order to change permissions in the
/usr/local/ directory.

sudo sh update-tlmgr-latest.sh -- --upgrade

??

your installation is owned by root, so either switch to root before
running the updater or add sudo in front

If you did what Herbert mentioned, you should not need sudo in the update

it seems you have to added the TeX Live binaries to the PATH search by root.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the present thread,
but I am running Fedora-17/KDE on my laptop,
and have been trying to update TeXlive.
I've enabled the fedora-updates-testing repo, as was suggested,
but still get the error:

i've not had the opportunity to use the shiny new fedora tl (i'm
supposed to be about to switch to an ubuntu machine), but i had assumed
it didn't run direct with a tl release, but rather required that you
wait until the feds had packaged a release.

so i'm using a separate tl install, on a /local/texlive setup. fwiw, my
pdftex benchmarks -- the only ones i have -- aren't significantly
different from what i get with tl'11.

Yes, I should have mentioned that I edited
/etc/yum.repos.d/texlive-release.repo , changing
baseurl=http://jnovy.fedorapeople.org/texlive/2011/packages.fc16/
to
baseurl=http://jnovy.fedorapeople.org/texlive/2012/packages.fc17/
