I currently don't have available the options of purchasing one of the
fine CD-ROMs or even downloading binary distributions of TeX due to
non-technical issues that are a) not important to this group and b)
irreversible at this time.
However, I do have the option of building a distribution from Source.
I am building this for a Solaris 2.5.1 system, with Sun's unbundled
C compiler. I have fetched the unixtex.ftp file (I believe it was called)
and from there fetched two tar files. One contains TeX3.14159 subdirectories
and the other had something called texmf. I built and installed TeX 3.14159.
However, the texmf tar file had what appears to be just std Solaris 'packages'
that I can't use - plus a directory called reloc. This directory appears
to have stuff that might be useful to install, if I had any idea whatsoever
how to do so.
I have built a lot of GNU and X based packages so I shouldn't need a lot
of help. I just need a few nudges in the right direction.
One of the things that happened the last time someone installed tex here was
that we had a lot of warnings from the dvi to ps programs complaining
about not finding the right resolution fonts. If that problem arises again
I may have a question or two on resolving that.
Is there perhaps a 'cookbook' document out there that walks someone thru
all this?

texmf is used to build the fonts used for printing from the metrics
known; not having this installed could also explain the messages about
not having the right resolution fonts (below)

Making TeX Work by Norman Walsh (O'Reilly & Associates) has a section
on building the source IIRC (it's been a long time since I read it).
If you're administering TeX I suggest you pick it up anyway.
