pgfplots pgf tikz external - ocg -- compatibility problem (?)

Hi!
On the texample website and in the newest pgfplots help documentation on the use of ocg layers can be found.
This seems to work great, but since I have about 16 3D plots on a single page I have to externalize these plots. Under these circumstances the ocg's don't work anymore.
When renaming the .dpth file to .aux and deleting the actual depth I can get the external file to contain the ocg layers but they do not work in the final document.
Has anyone experienced (and maybe solved) the same problem?
Any help would be appreciated!
