Struggling with various kinds of 'address-book'-type data (also known as
contact data), it occured to me that none of the formats I've dealt with
(Magic Cap, Apple PowerTalk, MS Mail, MS Exchange) really describe the
information properly and clearly. Generally they provide a set list of
fields to enter data into, with no sense of larger structure. I've
therefore come up with an SGML DTD for this kind of information, which is
expressive enough to describe the various roles we play (e.g. social and
professional) and how that affects such things as telephone numbers.
