need to save my filled in forms - Free way?

I really only use the pdf forms from the IRS/State to do our taxes.
Problem is many times I need to stop and come back. Is there a free
app for *gulp* win98se that would either allow me to save it or take
the place of adobe reader? I have to keep it in the original format
since we print these off to mail back to the IRS/State.

If you are still using Windows 98, then bookmark www.oldversion.com !

According to http://www.oldversion.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader.html, Foxit
PDF Reader version 5.0.1.0523 works on Win98. It's a pretty recent
version, and it's a long time since Foxit Reader allows saving form
data locally. (Not 100% sure thought, as I did not test it
personally.)

If you want, you could also try http://www.nitroreader.com/ . Does not
list Win98SE as supported, but there is a chance to work because Nitro
PDF Reader 2 seems to be a .NET Framework 2.0 application, and .NET
2.0 is available for Win98/ 98SE http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=19
. (Again, I did not try this myself on Win98SE, only on WinXP.)

I just tried on a clean install of Win98SE. 5.0.1.0523 does not
install but 3.0.1120 installs, runs, and has the ability to save form
data locally.

SaGS gave you good pointers, but yet another thought might be the virtual
PDF printer BullZIP PDF Printer (q.v.). That can "print" your filled-out
forms as PDF files, and let you continue to revise the fillings-out if
necessary, I believe.

I'd be very surprised if printing, whether to PDF, PS or LPT, preserved
fillable form fields. It deletes most other unprintable things.

Foxit Reader is really working great for what I need. Ver 3 was
crashing on me - I think I need to do a system wipe and reinstall, but
I got ver 2 and it is working well. It lets me enter fields and save
back to PDF - in fact using it's mark up functions (like typewriter) I
can even type over non-field areas, which is nice when I need to work
out a IRS worksheet - they don't have fields.

Up till now I had been using Open Office to create PDFs but now I have
a number of options.
