EPS will never display anything other a gray box on a Windoze OS. If you want an onscreen preview displayed then you need to add one in a Windoze friendy format (WMF, TIFF) or convert the EPS to and EPSI which also contains a low-res bitmap preview image.

You're printing to a Postscript printer, right, or at least printing postscript to a non-PS printer through a PS interpreter, such as Ghostscript? Otherwise, you cant't print EPS. The printer doesn't understand the subset of PS code which comprises EPS.
>Can this in fact be done? And if so how do I do it?
It would help to know what application your graphics are produced in and exactly how the EPS file is created. FWIW, both the M$ and Adobe PS drivers for Windoze appear to violate serveral of the constraints on commands allowed in EPS at various times. I never had problems with the Windoze 3.1/3.11 PS drivers in creating EPS files, but the W9x cearted a few hassles requiring some editing with an ASCII editor to remove offending commands in order to get something usable.

Correct, unless the TIFF is at very high res and then becomes quite large. Not that EPS files are all small.

Hi Richard, Use Ghostview to add a TIFF preview image to your EPS files. You can choose from several formats; TIFF6 Packbits works well with FrameMaker. You will then be able to see the TIFF preview in Framemaker. The high-quality Postscript will print on a PS printer, or use it to distill to PDF. Frame uses the TIFF preview to export GIF images for HTML output.
Yes it can be done. You just need decent EPS files.
I use Illustrator quite successfully to open (parse) raw EPS files from a variety of sources and then save as Illustrator EPS with a preview. This also gives you the option of removing extraneous material (bounding box, for example) that makes the EPS image size improperly when imported into another program. Sometimes it helps to save as to AI format after removing the junk and then open the AI file and save as back to EPS.
No one should ever have to settle for a bitmap when vector graphics exist.
I have had a bitch of a time working with eps files on Win98. My point of comparison is MacOS, which I used previously. What I found out was:
1) You will not be able to print an eps figure using the print software included in Win98. You must install Adobe's printer driver (AdobePS) that is included on the Frame install CD.
2) There are free updates at Adobe's site for the printer-driver software as well as for Distiller 3.0. I could not make a pdf file using Frame + adobe print driver + distiller 3.0. I updated the print driver software to AdobePS 4.2, but the key step was to update distiller to 3.01.
!! This means that the software included with Frame 5.5.6 for Wintel is not capable of creating a pdf file from a Frame file that has eps figures in it. You must get the updates. Adobe screws up again!!
3) I have had some print troubles using AdobePS 4.2 when printing onto an HP Printer. Characters in inline equations were sometimes shifted from their proper positions. Font spacings had some other problems. Adobe tech support said that the HP isn't a true PS printer but I thought that the older HP printers were, in fact, true PS. In any case, the most reliable way to print is to make a pdf file first.
4) It is useful to edit all eps files with Adobe Illustrator before inserting them in a Frame file. You are supposed to Save As Illustrator EPS v7 and it seems to be best to use a 1 bit preview. Then you can see the preview on the screen, which is nice.
My general comment about using Frame, Illustrator, and Acrobat on the PC is that there are many problems. Frame itself has been more stable under Win98; I had many Frame crashes on MacOS. The printing problem is very irritating. Why Frame can not print an eps figure using Microsofts PS driver is beond me! There appears to be a war between Microsoft and Adobe: Some versions of Office could not properly handle eps files and (tit for tat?) Illustrator seemingly can not handle a WMF file.

Itīs possible to import eps-graphics into FM5.5 (Win), but they are not displayed as long as they donīt have a tiff-header. Use Corel8 to import Your eps-file (may be as "postscript-interpreted", so that you can see the graphics inside corel!!!) an export it again into "encapsulated postscript". Corel automatically fits the bounding box arround Your object and will also ceate a tiff-image / "tiff-header" (about 72 dpi), that will be saved with the postscript-file. When You now import this eps-file, You will see the graphics with a bad solution, but good enough for handling inside the text document. Printing with a normal printer will end in this bad solution, to get the wanted result (eps-graphics printed as postscript) You will need to have a postscript printer.
