Hi

I am looking for a user guide, a reference manual or at least a quick reference of a Sperry / Unisys editor called CTS. Does anybody of you have it available to share it with me? It seems that there is no documentation available on the net.

I searched in the public documentation section at the Unisys web site but nothing is available (probably too old).

I look forward to a repsonse.

Thanks
Bernd

I don't know how relevant it is today but I think I my pocket guide is
in the binder with all my other pocket guides from my 1100 days. I'll
see if I can locate it.

I have it. But I guess I should have said something before about
CTS not being an editor. It is Conversational Time Sharing, a bit
more than an editor.

Not sure what Unisys would think about making a copy available, even
after all this time. Mineis for CTS 8R1.

I'm sure there's no real issue with this- the docs for current products
are all freely downloadable.

The problem would be that CTS isn't actually a current product - it's
been Category 3 (basically, unsupported, but kept around because
Unisys software uses it for product builds) for decades, now.

Does that mean my 8R1 doc is current? :-)

I will look into what it would take to scan it.

But the point is that there is no possible loss of revenue for them for
letting someone have a copy of the docs; Unisys are not selling a
manual, or the product, and don't support it anyway.

I can't see why they would care, however, IANAL.

There is, however, the cost of making the manual available. I am not
a bean-counter, but I know that factors into the decision.
There's also the fact that, at some level, Unisys does not want to
encourage the use of Category 3 software (note that this also bites
the engineers in Roseville).

The final version of CTS was 8R1C or 8R1D so yes, 8R1 documentation is as current as anything you will find. I have a Y2K CCF for CTS somewhere - it fixes the Signin Line and the date function.

That's probably true- but if I had a copy, I'd be happy to send out a
copy. I can't see Unisys pursuing it- it's not like someone who wants
to use CTS is in the market for anything else.

They've always had a slightly laissez-faire approach to cat 3 software,
IME: some stuff is too useful to actively fight against, but they don't
want to be landed with supporting it (even if they *haven't* lost the
sourcecode).

I remember the days when a load of interesting cat 3 and third-party
utilities (and other oddities like lists of "cute" MASM tricks) used to
circulate on tapes...

So, I checked at work, and we have paper copies of the following

8R1C CTS Release Description
8R1C CTS Installation Guide
8R1 CTS Programmer Reference Manual

8R1 CTS Programming Guide

I've asked management if we could send copies of these to Bitsavers,
I'm now awaiting a response.

Which of the above would be the one you're looking for?

Hi David,

Sorry for letting you wait for so long but I was on the road and haven't had the time to peek in the group.

I am definitely interested in all the documentation that gives the most insight about the language construct and their behaviour. IAW, I don't need the installation guide and probably I don't need release description.

Because you have the douments in front of you, maybe you can evaluate it on behalf me: Which of the documents fits the purpose of educating the software (and especially their embedded language) the best?

So, I guess the following documents would fit the best for my purpose (in descending order):

1) 8R1 CTS Programming Guide
2a) 8R1 CTS Programmer Reference Manual
2b) 8R1 CTS Programmer Reference Handbook
3) 8R1 CTS Operations Reference Manual (but I am not sure whether it is what I suspect it is)

I appreciate your offer to make it available a lot.

Thanks a lot and all the best.

Cheers
Bernd
