We have an 8mm drive that comes packaged with the 670Meg drive in the big
beige box. (Sorry for the lack of technical lingo) Anyway, I came into
work one day, and the tape drive was hung. The yellow light was on, and
whenever I tried to put a tape in, it spat it back out. We ended up rebooting
the system. Is there a way to avoid a reboot? I would imagine that doing
an L1-A and then turning the drive on and off might screw something up.

I have often L1-A'd sparcstations to unhang external SCSI hardware, be
it an Exabyte or a CD-ROM. Just turn the offending unit off and on again,
then type C on the Sun's console to continue. I have never had a bad
effect from this procedure.
