Problem is if I leave it for any length of time the keyboard stops
working. The only way to unfreeze the keyboard is then to disconnect
and reconnect the USB keyboard.
Any ideas?
Hmmm... I've had the same thing happen to my mighty mouse on an iMac.
The mouse wouldn't come alive until I unplugged and then replugged
again. I know that Solaris not OS X, but I had to remove some cache
files to remedy the problem along with a reboot.
Don't know if that will lead you to a solution tho.
We had that on a bunch of SunRay-2 after we got new keyboards model -02
instead of -01 which worked.
After a SunRay SRSS upgrade it all works so it could be the same on the
Blade 1500, I haven't checked that since our Blades all run very fresh
Solaris.

Is there anyway you can get a hold of a Sun USB keyboard to reproduce the
problem?
Other than that is your OBP >= 4.15? I believe 4.17.1 is the latest.
Even the new Type-7 Sun keyboards have problems with old OBP versions, i.e.
< 4.10.
So going to the latest may make your PC keyboard more responsive.

The Open Boot Prom on the computer, aka the firmware.
