depends on the context

could be hardware

could be a designation of a particular device

The term generally refers to a video terminal, teletype, or similar
device that serves as the primary means of communicating with the
system. This is where an Open Boot PROM prompt would be displayed on a
Sun system.

If you will describe your hardware configuration, supplying both
manufacturer's name and model, someone may be able to tell you more.

The term arises from the early days of computers when the things were as big
as houses. The console was a good description, as the beast was controlled
from a desk (console) often displaying the state of the registers as blips
on a cathode ray tube in binary format.

As machines were reduced in size, the term stuck and generally means the
station from which administrative functions are carried out. These days it
usually refers to a graphics window on a terminal of some sort, which can of
course be the computer's ordinary monitor.
