- is the mac contained in /etc/ethers? - maybe you need a configured defaultrouter on installserver - are the bootserver and server in the same subnet and has the bootserver a working route to this subnet?

mac is in /etc/ethers connected via crossover. boot server is 10.1.99.10 (255.255.255.192) client is (via ethers and hosts) 10.1.99.2
So what is the process that supplies the info to the request from the client?

I think I've worked out that the client is sending an ARP request but, for some reason, my server is not responding.
Like I said, entry in /etc/ethers so I dont understand it.

Mac in /etc/ethers. No default route but connection is just a crossover cable.
