posting here too in case you didn't notice it there.

I have this machine with 4 x Sparc v9 @ 296 MHz running
Solaris 10 Update 3 which I intend to upgrade to Update 6.

I first did luupgrade, but when I tried to boot to the new BE,
it fell back to the old BE.
I tried to boot the new BE by hand ("init 0", "boot disk2" etc)
but that gave errors.

I then tried to boot from the net, but that too failed, and
the errors (please see below) are same as when I tried
with the upgraded BE.

What am I doing wrong?

im assuming you did a init 6 after you activated the new BE?

What kind of machine?
