I have a SUN Ultra 10 system running on Solaris 8. Last couple of times the system crashed and required fsck to be run on it. I ran fsck successfully and the system had been working fine after that for about 2 weeks but since Feb 13th the following errors have started being reported in the messages file and same on the console screen.

I cannot login to the system as root only as non root user and also both /usr and /var filesystems are unuseable.

Below is the output of the df -k

$ df -k

Can anyone please help me how to fix the above errors and if it is a hard disk drive problem how do I replace it?

Thank you

Please!! Most people's screens do not display lines as long as the
above. Use your "Enter" key!! 70 characters per line is about right!

It certainly looks like a disk problem.
To replace the drive:
a. Remove the power cord.
b. Remove the cover.
c. Anti-static wrist strap and grounding cable is HIHGLY recommended.
d. remove the power cable from the drive.
e. remove the ribbon cable from the drive.
f. remove the 6-32 machine screws holding the drive in place.
g. remove the drive.
h. install the new drive. (Note that, no matter how large the drive,
the controller can't see or use more than 127 GB!)
i. replace the 6-32 machine screws removed in step f.
j. insert the ribbon cable connector in the new drive
k. insert the power connector in the new drive
l. replace cover.
m. replace power cord.
n. Boot from CDR/DVD ROM.
o. Install Solaris.

There's a little more to it I think --

I notice the devices are mounted as "/dev/md/..."

That means they are meta-disks. More than one disk
device mirrored or striped or something.

It is beyond my expertise to say how a disk can be
un-hinged from its counterpart -- I've done it before,
but it was a long time ago, so I wouldn't want to say
without a long consultation with reams of documents.

Do something like "man metastat" and proceed from there.
The "metastat" command without parameters will give you
a brief rundown on how the disks are ... uh ... "meta'ed".
