As far as I know, Sun does not sell the books separately! You can
either take the Sun courses at about $2000 each or try to find someone
selling his copies on e-Bay. I got my SA-238 books by taking the course
(paid for by my employer). I bought my SA-288 books on e-Bay.

There is very little, if anything, in either course that you cannot
learn by reading "Solaris 9 for Complete Idiots" or some similar title.
You can probably find several such books on e-Bay or at Amazon.com.

Some actual experience using and administering an actual Sun Solaris
system is extremely valuable. I'd suggest buying a suitable computer
and software on e-Bay. They frequently are available without hard
disks. I bought three Ultra 10 machines and a copy of Solaris 8. I
needed at least two to do networking, NFS, client-server, etc. I
installed hard disks (EIDE) salvaged from PCs, added memory and now I
have a nice little home laboratory. I don't need anyone's permission to
install software, modify configurations or anything else.

You can install Solaris X86 on a used PC; people throw them away all the
time. If you feel you need Sun SPARC experience, used hardware is very
cheap if you don't insist on high performance. I'd guess that Ultra 10s
should be available for less than $100 diskless. Blade 100s cost more
but you get better performance. Blade 150s are newer/faster than 100s
and, of course, more expensive. I use 20-40 GB EIDE disks salvaged from
PCs on my Ultra 10s. 127 GB is the maximum with Sun SPARC hardware.
The "Blade" family uses fiber channel (FCAL) disks and can, AFAIK, use
much larger disks

Consult your Sun sales rep for pricing on new Sun hardware. The
software, Solaris and the software development tools, is licensed free
of charge! You can buy a media kit or download the software. The media
kit may still come with some hardcopy documentation; it's been years
since I bought mine and things change. . . .

Sun documentation is available on line free at http://docs.sun.com or
you can buy printed and bound copies. If you want hard copy, it's
probably cheaper to buy than to try to print your own; you can do that
if you have a fast laser printer. It helps to have a duplex unit so you
can print both sides of a sheet of paper.
