Hello,

I currently have a small set of 4 computers running solaris 8. There
is one NIS master server, and the others are all clients. If there's
ever a problem with the master, none of the clients work until the
master is fixed. :-(

We have recently acquired a new sun running solaris 10. I would like
to make the new computer the NIS master server and make the old master
into a slave server. Theoretically, the new computer is less likely
to go down, and if/when it does, we will still have a slave to serve
the NIS info and thus prevent the rest of the computers from becoming
unusable.

My question is, how should I go about making the new computer (solaris
10) the master server and turning the old master (solaris 8) into a
slave server?

Thanks.

I have not tried to do this -- my finding that NIS is a lot
of hassle unless you have dozens of hosts that need to be
kept up-to-date -- therefore, having fewer than a dozen
machines to manage, I haven't worked with NIS in a long time.

But I would suggest you simply copy the files that are currently
under NIS management to the new machine, then take the documented
steps to make it the NIS master.

Then make the old machine a client, and it will proceed to ignore
its local copy of the files.
