The way the Sam Coupe handled it was BASIC kept a copy of the current
palette in memory but the actual palette was OUT only.

I often thought how nice it would have been to have been able to read the
palette with IN, but really it wouldn't have made that much difference...

On an aside, I have to say that it seems a tad ... pointless to reproduce
MGT's work, which appears (to me) to be what you're doing.
