I've been trying to install a fresh 6.5 distribution on an O2 while
using a 1600SW monitor. Once the I install the miniroot while in the
PROM, the screen goes black and never comes up with a PROM monitor to
start the inst. Anyone got anyideas? Is it to do with the monitor? The
monitor light blinks, which means loss of signal to me....

I just did this ... if it's raw 6.5.0, no gottum 1600sw support.
You have to upgrade to 6.5.3 to get 1600sw working. If you have
the package that came with the 1600sw there's an overlay to 6.5.3
in the box of software. 6.5.17 from SGI download also works :-)

I had to use a normal monitor to get past the 6.5.3 level. Then
it was fine.

Ah! I wanted to do a clean install (current install is so full of crud I
needed to clean up the stuff...), so I guess I'll have to haul the ol'
20 inch down from the attick things weighs around 50 pounds or
more...(grumble)....Thanks

Or, do the install _the right way_, and start from the latest
overlay install tools CD that you have.

Eh? I thought you had to use the miniroot from the 6.5 base CDs to do a
clean install ( correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the order 6.5.
base CD miniroot, 6.5. base software, THEN unpgrade to whatever overlay
you have?)

Use the latest overlay cds and the latest applications cd.
For a clean install, you also need to load the old Foundation 1 & 2,
the Development Foundation, Development Libraries, ONC3/NFS V3, and
if you need to, the HPUX MIB, latest base documentation cd, the latest
freeware cd, the latest compiler release, and any other specific
software for your site.

Nope. For a miniroot install, boot from the installation tools CD
from the desired/latest overlay set. Among other things, this
supports newer hardware, and the latest bugfixes in inst's overlay
handling... (well, actually anything more recent than about 6.5.4
has them all, except for some recent enhancements).

Then you open the base CDs and the overlay CDs. Inst knows all about
merging the overlay and base stuff. More CD swapping, but one
install session. We've recently discovered some bugs installing some
of the Freeware packages during a clean inst, so it's recommended to
install the Freeware stuff after finishing the base+overlay install.
You don't have to reboot inbetween, just do a "go" for the
base+overlay+apps before opening the Freeware CDs.

Thanks to everyone for their help on this - yes, after a few false
starts, the install went off well. Thanks again :-)
