Out of curiosity I opened up the package for a Keynote presentation to
see how images are handled. It was interesting the my PNG file at
around 150KB had now become TIFFs at about 4 times the size.

Is there anyway to force the application to retain the png files when
importing?

In the past I've found Mellel also does this when files are imported by
dragging them onto the document. In that case it is possible to retain
the original files (with smaller sizes) by inserting graphics through
the application menu rather than drag and drop.
