Is this a "user group"?

Unfortunately a large number of posts are totally off topic. In fact
they aren't even on this planet. I for one find these ramblings the
worst possible abuse of the users of this group. Perhaps I don't
understand but, I thought the purpose of this user group was to learn
about Palm technology and to help others.

Now I've said my bit and the anal retentives can return to the attack.
My God I feel sorry for their spouses.

Off Topic (OT) posts are the norm for USENET.

Get used to it.

Have you ever gone to user group meetings? I never owned a Kaypro
computer, but attended several of their meetings, most of which were
interesting. Perhaps because much of what was discussed would
technically be considered off-topic.

Much of it is helpful but I skip many of the messages whose
headers indicate that they're either about things that I'm not very
interested in, or they're a request for help, that I have little
knowledge of - unless I think I might learn something useful from
it. I hope you don't think that this ng should discuss hardware and
software only if produced by Palm.

You've been attacked? If so I haven't noticed it. Perhaps it's
been in some of the messages I've skipped. Either that or you're
trying to bait people into adding fuel to a flame war now that
you've lit the match.

No, this isn't a users group. This is a usenet newsgroup. What goes on
in here is par for the course for usenet. In fact, this is one of the
saner and more on-topic groups. Go find a genuine user's group to whine
in, if whine you must. Otherwise do what everyone else does: learn to be
discriminating about what you read, and you'll find it a very useful
place indeed to poke your nose into from time to time.

Unless you include electronic and/or inflatable devices, no one on
usenet has a spouse.

"tis the nature of usenet and not much you can do to enforce all
participants to post "properly" and on-topic.

What do you expect from a "user group"? I see postings from people who use
devices that want help, advice, software tips, etc. What does a user group
do differently?

They
a) meet IN PERSON periodically
b) have a mailing list
c) and don't use USENET

True, but there are many different types of newsgroups serving
many different purposes. This ng could have been limited in many
ways, such as to restrict discussion to "News" only. ie, current
and future developments in the Palm world, as reported in the trade
press. It could also restrict discussion to nothing but Palm
products (no Clies, TRGs, SanDisk or non-Palm software). Instead,
all of these are discussed, as well as how to "fix what's broke",
how to find a suitable dictionary, evaluate Flash cards, etc. In
other words, it's usenet's version of a user group. A support user
group, actually and yet --- it's still a newsgroup.

User group <==> newsgroup. Why do you think that they're mutually
exclusive? Newsgroups were not all created from the same template.

Bored and looking to pick a fight, are we?

As newsgroups go, this one is remarkably *on* topic with probably 95% or
more of posts directly related to the subject at hand. What exactly is your
complaint?
