One of the most annoying aspects of the Mac Desktop is that
something goes wrong, and boom, my address book is duplicated.

SAM
SAM
STEVE
STEVE

etc.

The M$ windoze Desktop has a Duplicate Finder that cleans up things
for you, but not the Mac.

I know their ancestry is way different, but why is it Palm has
never added one with all the other improvements they put in?

Is there any third party tool to do this?

Because it doesn't happen unless something has gone wrong ...

Are you HotSync'ing between Windows and Mac computers? What else might
be causing this ... do you think?

I do not normally sync to the M$ box, only 2 OSX ones.

That's a start. Can you give some details, e.g., version numbers, same
username, ...

Might be that the Palm software one one machine thinks you haven't
synced to it in the past because the last sync was to Palm software on
the other machine.

In PDT, menu Tools, select Addins, Delete Duplicates.

I now have 4.2.1 on both boxes but have run other versions. Yes,
it's the same username...I both want 2 backups plus the utility
of having all the addresses & calender available at home.

It was less of an issue when I ran one M$ & one Mac; the duplicate
deleter just cleaned up for me.

It looks to me as if Desktop just assumes there is one sole HotSync
machine; I can't predict when the applecart will tip over; it just
does.

Try a Mac duplicate finder software which wil automatically find out all the duplicate files from your Mca system and then will remove them easily without harming other stored data in your system.

In the Palm desktop, under File, choose Export and export the
contacts as a CSV file. Once you've got the CSV file there are any number of
ways to dedupe it. There's a program called Quicklist that does it, but
I like to use sort|uniq, i.e., sort my.csv|uniq|tee mynew.csv. Once you've
cleaned it up make another backup copy of your contacts saved under the
default file format. (Let me repeat that : ONCE YOU'VE CLEANED IT UP MAKE
ANOTHER BACKUP COPY OF YOUR CONTACTS SAVED UNDER THE DEFAULT FILE FORMAT.
You need to be able to get back to where you were if something goes wrong.)

Now that you've got your clean csv file and your complete recent
backup, delete all your contacts to get a clean slate then import your clean
csv file. If it gets messed up delete them all again but import the backup.
To be completely thorough you could test both the backup and the new csv file
by adding a new Palm device and login to the desktop.

You need cygwin or linux or something to use sort and uniq but
they're free.
