im trying to get this sorted - and failing .
I keep getting a message "unable to initiate HotSync operaiton because
the port is in use by another application ". I cant work out what is
wrong and the necessary sequence of events

Which end (PC or palm) has the problem ?

te plam can see the PC. using blueman on ubuntu (karmic) I can see
and pair the palm
Do i need to pair the devices before hotsyncing ?

I get prompted by the palm for setting up a serial connection when im
adding the network connection ???????

is there a 'read my lips' instruction for this and its relationship
to the generic PC/bluetooth setup ?

Poke the reset hole on the Palm, that should free up the Bluetooth if it
is busy. But usualy it is the PC that has a program holding the
Bluetooth hostage with some app.
