The crash is characterized by a "flashing Palm logo" on startup. The
normal logo blinks on and off. There is no recovery except a hard
reset with complete data loss.
My wife's IIIxe has had this problem. It occurred almost weekly at
first, then the device was sent for repair. The problem did not occur
for a month after that. She does not use the device very much (due to
its record of unreliability) and has no hacks installed. She does have
a fondness for the Sol Free game.
Palm has now sent me a replacement device rather than a repair. They
say that if this occurs again they will consider replacement with
something other than a IIIxe. The IIIxe was not a big seller and is
now defunct, so it is unlikely Palm will dedicate resources to
debugging this problem.
Anyone with additional experience?

My IIIxe does this sometimes when I replace the batteries. I didn't realize it
was a common problem.

1. similar crashes were seen with the 2000 Vx when it had a bad 8MB
memory chip. Presumably Palm would not make the same mistake twice?
2. most persons experience this within 1-2 weeks of acquiring the
device.
3. one person reported seeing after they changed batteries.
