I have a user ( who happens to be a friend of mine ) who is mired sooo deep
in the backwards ways of dos that he has decided that instead of learning how
to use the vi editor he will just label it user hostile, and complain to me
about it. If this was anyone else, the response would be simple, but it's not.
Does anyone know of a realy simple editor that can be used instead of vi, ad
of course where I can get a hold of one? Preferably some public domain thing
on the net.

Thanks,
Zeke

Try JOE (Joe's Own Editor). It is a simly what-you-type-is-what-you-get
wordstar like editor. It is customizable with a .joerc file. The latest
source should be available via anon. ftp from wpi.wpi.edu under /stusrc.

I retreived it today and got it up and running within 20 minutes.

hope this helps

If he's really into DOS and stuff, he might be inclined to use ed :-) it's
probably just as bad as edlin. It's funny about editors, everyone has his own
preferences. I, for instance, won't even touch a DOS if I don't have my Life
saving floppy with VI on it. You can guess the looks on my friends faces when I
do this.

Sorry for not being more constructive. But I just couldn't resist.

Richard

PS. I hated vi during my first three or so months of working with UNIX.

Well, I picked up pico and I can now STRONGLY recommend this editor for those
of you with the same problem I had ( i.e. users who refuse to learn vi or emacs
) Pico is short and sweet, and puts everything you need to know right there on
the screen. I recommend you pick it up and check it out.
Thanks to all who responded, and especially to William Gilbert.
