Keeps putting "6" in Area Code

I've a Newton Message Pad 2100 (not the one in the other post, but an original). It keeps putting a "6" in the Area Code field when I create a new Person in Names. MP 2100 no long has sound

I've a Newton MessagePad 2100 (upgraded 2000) that has ceased to produce sound. I've double checked the Sound Preferences and I've even resorted to "hard resetting" the computer. Any ideas? I just got a lovely eMate 300 from an eBay auction, and it's in great shape and working fine, except for one odd thing that may or may not be a big deal.
