Problems with MacOS 8.1 and NCU 1.0

I finally upgraded my Mac OS 8 to 8.1 and all seemed fine until I wanted
to downlaod a .pkg to my MP 2000. I get the following message from NCU on
my PowerMac:
"Could not initialize the Serial Communication port because the selected
communication tool was not found. Try reinstalling the communication
tool."
What is this? This is frustrating. I use my Newton with my mac and I
need to communicate, how am I going to restore this. I have my system 8
backed up for my desktop machines so that is easy, but I did not bother
with my Powerbook where I use my Newton most. It is going to be a pain to
go back to MacOS 8 on it so I am trying to find out what the heck is going
on. Is NCU not compatable with 8.1, any ideas?

It looks like when you installed 8.1, you probably did it from scratch, and
you inadvertently removed a couple of communication tools used by NCU.
Try re-installing NCU and everything should be fine. I'm using NCU with 8.1
on my 660AV without any problem, err. with the usual problems but not this
one!

This happened to me just yesterday. I ended up downloading NBU all over
again. But after fighting with it enough I was able to get a much more
specific error message. It wanted the Appletalk ADSP Tool, which is
contained in NBU. I don't know if it's available by itself.
It was kind of stupid on Apple's part, unless the rumors of the Newton's
demise are much more accurate than usual.

NCU uses the AppleTalk ADSP Tool and (I believe) the Apple Modem Tool,
which are usually found in the Extensions Folder of the System Folder. If
you did a clean install of OS 8.1, these were not installed and need to be
dragged onto the active System folder from their former locations.
