Our company's old MIPS 120/5 died of primary hard drive failure a few
months ago. After several days of searching, I found a replacement drive
for $600 at PPC (805.241.0074). I have installed the drive and the machine
passes self-tests.

I now need to re-install RISC/os 4.00 from two QIC-24 format tapes. The
only documentation that I have refers me to the "Detailed instructions
that were included with the tapes", which of course after at least 6 or 8
years, nobody can find.

If anyone can give me instructions on how to start the OS install, I would
be very greatful. I have been able to boot the format util from tape and
format the new drive, and I can boot sash from the tape as well, but I
don't know how to proceed from there.

PS: A CC in email would be appreciated in addition to any followup, as the
newsfeed at our provider is sporadic at best.

I only have experiance with RISC/os 5.01, this is how it goes...

Your first step is to get the drive correctly formatted. I can't give
too much advice on this, because I really don't know a whole lot about
it. But the manuals that come with RISC/os assume that your drive is
correctly formatted.

Next you want to boot sash from the tape. You said you knew how to do
this, so I won't go into that.

Once you get into sash, you need to copy the miniroot file system to your
swap space (just a temporary file system from which to install) use the
sash command:

cp tqis(,,4) dksd(,,1)

where tqis(,,4) is your scsi tape drive on controler 0, drive 6, and
the miniroot system is the fourth file. dksd is your primary scsi drive
on controloer 0, drive 0, swap partion is partion 1 (default).

next you want to

boot -f tqis(,,7)unix.r2400_st root=isc0d0s1

the manual says it's actually unix.r2400_std, but on my disk it's just st
This should get you into a fimilear root prompt and the instructions are
on screen. Let me know if you need more help

I've found a really old logfile (dated:1989 Aug 7 !!) for installing
RISC/os4.0 on to M/120.

Basic idea is:
1) Boot sash.
2) Copy miniroot on to swap area (partition 1 on the disk).
3) Boot the miniroot.
4) Start up install program!

Here it goes:
