Start-up error, as well as type 2 or -97 when printing.

Hi all

I am posting the message on behalf of my aunt, as she treats me like
the computer tech that I am not. Well in any event she is having a
number of problems with her iMac. Below is the description of her
computer and the problems she is encountering.

My aunt is using an iMac 233mhz rev.B running on Mac 9.2 with 256mb of
ram.

Firstly she gets an error upon starting her computer about 40% of the
time. This is a new one on me, as I think that I have only heard of
this happening, but have never seen it. I know it is hard sometimes to
pen point the exact problem from these postings, but was hoping might
have a clue as to the problem and solution.

Secondly the driver for her Epson Stylus 740 Printer got deleted by
mistake. After downing a new copy, as well as an update to this she is
having a number of printing problems.

First time after installing the driver I had to force quit MS Word, as
it froze up. Then the next time I was asked to use the Chooser to
select a printer. I tried this with little luck. I either would get an
error when trying to open Chooser or when trying to print. These
included type 2 or type -97 errors. Also received messages telling me
to that there was not enough memerory to complete that operation. I
understand that type 2 errors are sometimes caused by software
conflicts, but I don't think we have that problem before or not in a
long time. I have not added any new software lately, other than a
recent version of MS Explorer.

One last thing before I finish my message. I am wondering if installing
MacOSX is an option. Not sure if she has enough memory9hard drive
space) or not. I am asking, as I seem to have far fewer problems with
OSX than I ever did in OS 7, 8, or 9.

It would help if you in turn gave some clue about what "an error" is.

My car has a problem. Can you give me a hint as to why that might be.

You need to specify what the error message is. An error at boot often
means that the OS will have to be reinstalled. But at least, your aunt
can run Disk First Aid, and, if she has it, Disk Warrior.

Error-97 means that the port is in use by another device? Is it
possible that your aunt downloaded the Epson serial drivers rather than
the USB drivers?

If you are getting Type 2 errors when trying to print from within an
application like MS Word, try increasing the memory allocated to Word
in the Get Infor box.

I wouldn't if your aunt has been happy with OS 9. But, if you decide
to install OS X - check the Apple site to see if your aunt's iMac is
one that requires a firmware upgrade before installing.

Sorry, I did not think to write the error code until I started this
message. Seems, as though it was a bomb of some sorts.

I had to do that last Summer, as she had having problems with the
computer. Lets hope that I won't need to do this all the time.

I used Disk First Aid and it seems that everything is okay.

I also uped the memory allocated to Word. That did not work.

I think she is fine with OS 9. Only thing I was thinking is that OSX
seems to run with fewer errors and problems than the previous operating
systems.

This iMac maxes out at 512mb RAM (and that's using one piece that a special
size to fit!). That's the absolute minimum I would run OS X on. In addition,
233MHz will be pretty slow with OS X.

Besides which, do you want to spend $129.00 retail for OS 10.3, on a
computer that's only worth about $100.00 (check completed sales on eBay)? I
wouldn't.

I'm with Cathy; stick with OS 9, but fix the issues.
