Are there any Firewire splitters available?
I've got an external Firewire 800 drive I use for Time Machine backups, but it's also partitioned into 2 other volumes I want to share with another computer that's also Firewire capable. I want to split the Firewire cable to connect to both computers simultaneously.

System Thinks HD is Full -- Fixed
Thanks to all who replied. I "fixed" it by restoring from a SuperDuper backup. I have no idea what caused the event, and I have no idea where the excess files were hidden. sudo du -sh ~/* didn't show anything unusual (I compared the directory sizes on the affected drive with the those on the unaffected external drive). I'm beginning to suspect that a corrupt... more »

System Thinks HD is Full
MB Pro 17, 10.6.1, 4 GB RAM... I installed a 500 GB drive in this machine some months ago. It has performed flawlessly. It has (or had until last night) about 206 GB of free space. In the wee hours of this morning, as I was working on an image in Photoshop, a pop-up warning told me that the disk was full. I was... more »

Installing XP SP0 on MacBook Pro 13'
I'd like to install Windows XP on my new MacBook Pro. Its ("BootCamp") documentation says that Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later are supported. However, I only own the original XP CD (before Service Packs). Does anyone know if I will be able to install this old XP and then update it? What do I need for it? I tried searching for this... more »

Snow Leopard, Empty Trash and Locum
What is Locum? Since upgrading my MacBook to SL, whenever I try to empty the Trash I find a minimum of 6 items in it, even if exposing the contents shows only 2 items. Actually emptying the Trash can take anything up to 40 minutes, during which time Activity Monitor shows continuous data write activity of 5-30 Mb/sec and a CPU usage of over 120% (on a dual core... more »

Mac tablet
[link] Anyone here actually have one? I'm wondering: 1. Imagine a non-technical person with only one arm. NO experience with any kind of touch screen. Long time occasional user of Panther but only for web browsing and e-mail. Would she find using the pen awkward? 2. Probably would not use Windows, but if we do,... more »

The Gas Chambers Lie is Defamation of Germans

Pushing MacSpeech to its limits, frustrating
Just for fun, I wanted to push the low-cost version of MacSpeech to its limits, to see what it is capable of doing. Below my signature line is the resulting (corrected) text from my verbal dictation, using a standard low-priced version of MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.5 ($200) Used standard mic and USB adapter that came... more »

how slow is macports?
In article <150a9851-b52d-4f44-81b1-0707f c6c2...@u25g2000prh.googlegrou ps.com>, ...You mean, just to download and install? It's hard to say, because ports often have more dependencies than you'd expect, especially since the port you want may depend on one thing, which in turn depends on others,... more »
