Java running amok
Ever since a powercut last night Java has been running at between approx. 80 and 130% CPU usage. Restarts, logging into other accounts, quitting the Java process, closing all apps - none of it helps. I'm on a mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac running 10.5.8. Any advice beyond reinstalling OSX which I'm not keen on? I have backups of everything of... more »

Keychain
I have saved all my web IDs and passwords, including banks and credit cards, in notes on my keychain. That should be safe, right? I had been happily using this way of storing my passwords until yesterday when I went to open one of the notes so I could get a password. The note wasn't there. Gone. All of the notes were gone.... more »

ISP speed
I am out in the boonies of Costa Rica. I managed to get internet via tower broadcast. It is not very good but the only store in town. There are no telephone lines where I live. Most people use cell phones. Anyway, my question is about the ISP speed. My provider uses speedtest.net to test the speed it is providing because it is... more »

Odd USB Extension Cable
Someone just "gifted" me with a large box of assorted cables. Among them was an Apple-branded USB extension (male "A" on one end, female "A" on the other) with the addition that the female connector has a little bump sticking into the side of the socket so that no "ordinary" male USB plug can be inserted. I'm told that this cable is for use with an Apple... more »

Speech Recognition on your iPhone?
As you know, I never blow smoke up your skirts, I tell you the bad as well as the good. Speech recognition on your iPhone? Not quite, but you can record an audio file, then LATER, when you get access to a Mac, convert that audio file to text automatically. Beats typing it up from the audio recording.... more »
