I'm using YA NewsWatcher and some of you people have a pretty neat Icon
that appears in the upper right hand corner of the NewsWatcher menu.
So, I'm asking because I'm jealous, how did you do that? Can I do it?
Or is it only for the Mac Jedi Knights?
Hey, I'd rather be a droid in the Mac universe than Darth Vader in the
Evil Empire!

they're x-face headers. mine's still in production. search for "saving face"
it's by simon frasier (or however you spell it) and should be on his web
page also

Right you are. Look at the full headers of any message containing these
nifty pics and you'll see a header named X-Face. In my case, there's also
one called X-Author, since the original author of the pic asked that
anyone who used it include that header too. You can find Simon Fraser's
Saving Face program at his web site, which is at
<http://www.best.com/~smfr/mtnw/>, and you can follow the link for Cool
Features.

I'm sure you'll get lots of replys, but I'll add mine. The little icon is
called an 'X-Face Header'. Simon Fraser wrote both the current
Multi-Threaded NewsWatcher (MT-NW) and its companion X-face making app
'Saving Face'. In the 'Preferences' of MT-NW you will see a catagory of
'Extra Header Lines.' This is where you put your X-Face code. (This code
may be typed into the header information of some other programs.) Each
code letter or symbol is read as a 'one bit' string, that is, if the code
is 'd' and the binary byte for 'd' is 11101001, thn there will be 3 black,
1 white, 2 black, 1 white pixels in a row (or something like that, as some
compression is involved.) The whole X-Face is a square of 48 X 48 pixels.

To make the code, the easiest way is to use Simon's freeware 'Saving
Face.' All you need to do is 'Edit' => 'Copy' an image you want, say from
an Icon, and 'Paste' it onto the 'Saving Face' box. The box is saved as a
document, and when opened will display a strange looking code like this:

X-Face: ln4+6(TY1~jT4][zVrLN(6JJ@\dHf}1\K.YJf?{+Lk-KL;~{3wnU+a|eF$5jL
"faN_75!ZpXnmimolqdXM2rl6

If this code string is then placed in the 'Extra News Headers' or 'Extra
Mail Headers' pref file the image will show up in your headers when you
post. (Please feel free to try the above code.) When you TEST your X-Face
please use a test newsgroup. I use <alt.test.ignore.yes.its.that.easy> (!)
That's the one I watch.

Remember that this is ONE BIT code so it only shows 1/0, black/white
pixels: NO SHADING! If you have any kind of Icon Tool such as 'Fast Find'
on Norton Utilities you can make a black and white Icon from scratch very
quickly or modify an existing one. Pictures can also be made or
transferred with Adobe Photo Deluxe or other image processers.

Currently I am using 'Graphic Converter 3.6' to make my patterns. It is
very easy to make a whole set of the full size 48 X 48 pixel images
(larger than a converted 'Icon'), but remember, for some reason 'MT-NW'
will only allow you to paste 255 characters into the 'Extra News Headers'
box. Very complicated 'X-Faces' must be simplified or pasted into the
posting manually. Of course, this is a pain in the butt if you have spent
hours perfecting one good image. On the other hand, 'YA-NW' will let you
paste as much as you want AND allow for many different 'Personalities'
each with its own 'X-Face' and 'Sig' lines, &c. But then I really hate
'YA-NW.' Oh, well ...

Please down load from Simon and say thanks:

'Graphic Converter' is indispensible shareware ($35) and can be found at
any download site.

Hey, very cool! I had seen a coupla threads about these guys, and didn't
know what I was missing. Some brief questions, if you don't mind:

1) Is this a widely implemented extension of Usenet?
2) Is this form of extension completely open? i.e. could someone
unilaterally write a news client that wrote and read an "X-blahblahblah"
header to do something else?
3) Is there a list somewhere of which news clients support X-faces? How
'bout on PCs, where I sometimes have to read my news.

Thanks!

No, it's mostly a Mac thing, and even then you have to have MT-NW, or
YA-NW, or some other more obscure NewsReader to view them.

You mean like a trapdoor Trojan horse inside the NewsClient that somehow
eats up all the M$-Word files if it reads a certain encoded 'X-Face?' I
don't know. The 'X-Face' header is just a line or two (up to 255 char.
in MT-NW 2.4.4) of bytes that the news reader has to read, and then turn
into B&W pixels. A program like you suggest would be fairly large.

I'm sure someone knows, and I'm fairly sure it's been talked about on
these groups; but I'm happy with MT-NW 2.4.4 (until 3.0 comes out) and I
don't do Windoze.

Hey, I don't think MacSOUP is obscure! ;-)
