I have a couple webcams I want to watch, but they require Java. Any particular reason that I shouldn't d/l it and set it up? If so, any alternatives if I want to watch these webcams? Running 10.8.2

My main browser is Safari; it has Java disabled. If I need to visit a web site that requires Java, I use Firefox, in which I have enabled Java. I quit Firefox and return to Safari as soon as I am finished with the Java website.

I have it active on FF. But when I go to the site, it still says plug-in missing and sends me to the website to d/l Java for Mac OS X
Recommended Version 7 Update 9. Should I d/l and set it up and then double check to make sure disabled in Safari.

Do you have it enabled in general? Open Java Preferences (it's a separate application in /Applications/Utilities, not a System Preference) and make sure it's enabled.
I ran into this a couple of days ago at speedtest.net. Chrome asked me if I wanted to allow Java to run on the site, I said yes, but it still said "Applet disabled" until I changed the preference.

I don't see it in my utilities. That goes directly from iPod Software Updater to Key Chain. Nothing in between. K

You need to install Java first.
I misunderstood your earlier post. When you said you had it active in FF, I thought you meant that you had it installed.

Mea culpa. I just meant that I had it ticked. I had heard enough about Java to be confused. Thanks for the assist(s) to all.

An add-on called Prefbar provides click-on/click-off control of Javascript and Flash in Firefox.
