Usually this is due to custom icons or other resources in the resource
fork of the alias file in question.
Try this command in a terminal window:
ls -al filename/..namedfork/rsrc
It will display the size of the resource fork of the file.
For example, I currently have an alias on my desktop that points to a
TextEdit RTF document. The data fork of the alias is 47K in size. The
resource fork contains one 'alis' resource that is 362 bytes in size,
and one 'icns' resource that is 45K in size.

Aliases contain a copy of the icon of the original file. This results in
the alias varying considerably in size depending on which system version
created or copied the alias.
The icons in 10.5 and 10.6 are MUCH bigger than the icons in 10.4, since
Leopard and later has icon sizes up to 512 x 512.

I'm pretty sure (not absolutely positive) I've noticed significant
variations in alias size in Leopard (the only OS X I'm familiar with) even
for similar (viz, same size and parent) originals.

I think we had a long thread about this topic 3-6 months ago. There
were lots of details posted there.

That was the one perhaps where I wanted bigger for photo previews
(rather than mere icons).... I think. I like the idea of 512 very much.

Yep!
