I often prepare documents I wish to fax in Microsoft Word. I have a
Brother MFC.

To send a fax, I select print to bring up the Print dialog box. On
Copies a& Pages, I select Send Fax. A grayed out window appears that
looks designed to store names and numbers of destinations.

The dialog indicates that output will be for a Printer. My next step is
to change output to Facsimile. The grayed out list appears to become
active, but I cannot figure out how to enter let alone save any
destination information there.

There is a line for entering a destination telephone number. To send the
fax, that number must be "added." While adding this number with a mouse
click does start the faxing process, it gives no asting entry to the
list of destinations.

What to do?

Sam, you don't say what version of Word and Mac OS you're using,
but is it possible that the phone numbers are supposed to come
from Address Book/Contacts? Do you have any fax numbers there?

I am using a Mac Pro with the latest Snow Leopard. I am using Office
2011.

It is not clear to me where the dialog window comes from. That is why I
posted here.

During the process, I get down to the point where I enter a FAX number.
There is a textual Add button that transfers the entered number to the
destination list. More numbers can get added for multiple destinations.
I can send at that stage but cannot save to the destination list. I see
no head. I only see a - button that will remove an address once added to
the destination list.

I certainly am able to do that. I was under the impression that doing so
would be bad netiquette. I have not seen anything on this newsgroup like
that before.

With the drop in storage cost and time-bandwidth product, that would be
a very useful tool to have.

Yeah, why does Google do that? (Sorry, that may be a deep, unanswerable
metaphysical question. :-))

At least they have a button you can click to go into the OS X
print dialog, but I didn't see that the first time I wanted to
print from Chrome, so it was confusing. I don't know why they
decided to confuse Mac users by not making the standard dialog
box the default option.

Adobe does the same thing. Try printing from Adobe Reader. I actually
prefer the Adobe Reader print dialog over the standard Mac OS X dialog.
It has the common controls in view by default, and you don't have to go
around paging through the drop-down menu looking for what you want to
change.

As for why, I think it comes under the categories of competition and
innovation. Adobe and Google think they can do better. For me, anyway,
Adobe has done better. I don't use Chrome very much, and haven't ever
printed anything from there, so can't comment.

posting a link is not bad etiquette.

embedding the actual image in the post is what's bad etiquette.
