Someone labelled the trash brown from the label menu?

Without knowing any more information I would suggest seeing if you have
the icon labeled with a brown color. If that is a probability you should
check your hard drive for all lableled icons.
Find File is capable of checking for you:

Launch Find File and toggle the request to read "Find Items on [xxx]
whose label is [depress the arrow selector and select the color that
appears brown to you]. If "Trash" (icon) is "brown labled", unlabel it.

Hope that is what ails you.

It must be 'labeled' brown. Check the labels menu when the Trash is selected.

Almost time to do a bit more exploring with MacOS 8 (I entered
a state whereby the clock seemed to stop until I clicked on
something or other and decided it was time to defer further
exploration for a while).

Anyway, the one thing I could not find anywhere was how to
change the label of an item. Where did they hide this?
[Obviously there is still some support for labels, as there
is an option somewhere or other to display them (or note)...]

They've gone and moved it under the Finder's File menu. Alternatively
you can do <Control>+<Mouse-Down> to show the popup menu for
that item.

Cheers.
