Firmware on my Airport Express wall brick got updated yesterday to
6.3. Now it won't talk to my old Airport Base station. I use the
Airport Express to relay the signal from the base station to another
computer on the other side of the house. Now, the two won't talk to
each other. I checked the settings on the AE. It's set to participate
in WDS as a remote base station. It is set to talk to the main base
station in the basement via the base station's ID. All the settings
are correct, but now it simply won't join the network. I hope there is
a fix for this and this is not Apple's way of forcing me to buy
another base station product since my main base station is pretty old.
I've had it for more than four years and it is the 802.11 b/g capable
model not the newer 802.11 n capable one.

So your main base station is an Airport Extreme (looks like a flying
saucer; has two Ethernet ports and USB for a printer). Which firmware
version is it running?

How recent is the 6.3 firmware update for the 802.11g Airport Express?

I was probably using the same combination of base stations, firmware and
WDS mode until about two years ago, when I upgraded to an 802.11n
Airport Extreme. (I kept the old Airport Extreme so I could use it to
set up temporary WiFi networks.)

Since then I've sold my Airport Express and replaced it with an 802.11n
model, so I can't test your specific combination unless I visit the
friend I sold my Express to and try them again.

Firmware on old (flying saucer) Airport Extreme main base station is
5.7.

Firmware on Airport Express brick is 6.3 updated yesterday.

I don't know how old that update is, I assume it is the newest
available for that Airport Express model.

Problems started around time of update, the two worked fine together
previously.
