We all remember the "1984" ads for Macintosh...

But today, I spotted a pretty scary message in the system.log....

Jan 5 05:35:16 velo SyncServer[44253]: Datamanager Vacuuming all the
truth segments.

Quick, backup the truth before your Mac will vacuum it away :-) :-) :-)

And for those who don't know, "The Truth" is the database maintained by
Mac OS X which holds everything accessed through Sync Services,
including the data for Address Book and iCal.

I assume it is implemented as an SQLite database. I've heard of the term
"vacuuming" in that context, as a mechanism for the database to reclaim
space previously occupied by records which have been deleted. Similar to
FileMaker's "compact" mechanism.

I see this on a backup disk, though not my current disk, probably
because I don't do any synchronization of Address Book or iCal with
other systems.

SQLite does indeed have a "vacuum" command:

As I understand it, The Truth has the reference copy as at the last
sync, which can be used to compare with other databases or devices to
detect what changed. The data displayed and edited in Address Book,
iCal, etc. is stored in separate files maintained by those applications.
They are automatically updated from The Truth if a sync has brought in
new data from elsewhere.

It therefore makes sense that if you've never synced with MobileMe, Sync
Together or iSync that you don't have The Truth.

Or perhaps you just can't handle The Truth. :-)

Careful, I haven't heard that one since my mother died ;-)

(Damn Google, I can't find a decent summary any more, but a VAX was a
