sure you have selected the actual project (the first entry in that column).
Then try again to add files.

The files are still greyed out. The workaround was to drag & drop from
the Finder.
I'm increasingly convinced that XCode is very immature compared to
Codewarrior.

actually XCode is a big shit compared to Codewarrior: bugs all around (I
have seen your problem also a couple of times), slow, not very user
friendly etc.
I still do all the development with Codewarrior and use XCode only for
the final stage. I think that this is the best solution for the time
being.
