Heya folks

Just to let you know I have hardly any knowledge on Macs, however I am
improving slightly...

My friend's Mac crashed and burned, however data recovery is going to
cost them quoted at around.. $700 - $1500 smacks to retrieve and stick
on a USB. That's just plain stupid - or isn't it? Recovering data from
a PC is easy, with the IDE/Sata to USB cable... so...

I'm guessing the HDD of a Mac is different and isn't IDE/SATA? I doubt
it. But when quoted that much.. I'm assuming there is a major
procedure or equipment evolved. Lol.

So, are Mac HDD any different than out PCs? Data recovery for a Mac is
simply opening it, taking out the HDD, and extracting info like we
would a PC?

Thanks in advance!

That depends on what broke. If the HD is sane physically and
logically, you're right. If e.g. the file structure on the HD is
damaged, or even worse, if the HD is physically damaged, a lot of
effort and special equipment may be required to recover (parts of) the
data. In that case, the quote above may even be on the inexpensive
side.

AFAIK (I'm far from a Mac expert) the HD hardware is the same, but the
format is different - so while you will be able to remove the HD and
access it in a PC, you won't be able to read the HFS+ filesystem on
it.

OTOH, depending on the age, model and "level of brokenness" :-) of the
machine, it might still support something called Firewire target disk
mode - worth checking, more details e.g. here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Disk_Mode

If that works, you can access the data from another Mac without even
needing to remove the HD. If an Apple store is in your vicinity, I'd
bet they'll assist you with that for free - make an appointment with
one of their Geniuses.

Regards,
Gilles.
