Hi, in our lab we have an old and trusty HP Laserjet 4 with a JetDirect
card, which works fine. I can print to the printer when connected to the
campus network via ethernet, but not when connected via airport.

Other printers in our department are able to be accessed when connected
wirelessly (although none are this old).

When I setup the printer, (using ethernet) the only way to get it to
work it to add the printer using a JetDirect socket (as opposed to LPD
or IPP). I suspect that this might be part of the problem, but I
couldn't find much information on this on the web.

Is there something I can do to get this working?

Thanks

Alan

I have a slightly newer JetDirect EX Plus with my HP LaserJet 6MP. It
works with JetDirect Socket and with LPD, but not with IPP, so I'd
expect the same with your one.

LPD usually requires the printer to be manually configured, so you would
have to enter its IP address, and select the model and installed
options.

In a simple network, I'd expect your printer to work with Airport or
Ethernet. I'm using JetDirect Socket with my printer via Airport. (I
have an Airport Extreme base station, and the JetDirect is connected to
one of its Ethernet LAN ports.)

The issue may be precisely how your campus network has been set up. If
its wireless network is a separate IP range from its Ethernet, there
will be a router between the two networks, and that router may be set up
with firewall rules which are blocking certain ports. That may include
the port used by JetDirect Socket (I don't know offhand which one that
is).

If the other printers are using Windows printing protocol, the routers
may be set up to allow that port/protocol through the firewall.

If you can at least find out what IP addresses and subnet masks are
being used by your computer when it is connected to Airport and
Ethernet, and the IP address of the printer, that will narrow down the
scope of possible explanations.

It might also help if you told us which version of Mac OS X you are
using. That may affect the options available to you.

Alan-

One of my HP printers stopped working when I upgraded to an Apple Time
Capsule AirPort base station. It turns out that the Time Capsule, as
well as many other brands of WiFi routers, do not pass AppleTalk between
the Ethernet side and the Wireless side.

The printer now shows up in the Add Printer window, but only under
Bonjour. Not AppleTalk! I expect I could also print to the printer's
IP address (supplied by DHCP over Ethernet from the Time Capsule).
However, I'd feel more secure if there was a manually assigned IP
address that I could depend on.

If you can ping it, you should be able to print to it.
