Help: External video for PB520

Hi,

I recently purchased a PB520 and have attempted to connect it to various
multisync monitors (mostly NEC and Apple) for determining the right monitor
for my purposes. However, I have ran into a glitch...the video always comes
out in 640 X 480 mode. The spec's say that I should be able to get 800 X 600
but when I called Apple, they referred me to a company called Exchange Cable
at 1-800-343-2425. I've left a message with them on Saturday but haven't
heard back yet.

Has anyone out there had success getting outputs to 15" or 17" monitors with
modes other than 640 X 480? Additionally, what external monitor do you
recommend for a PB520? Thanks for any help you can offer!

If the PB520 external video is handled the same way as the 1XXs that
have external video, then it's all in the adapter.

There are a number of places to get the appropriate adapter to give
you the resolution mode you want. (Some CompUSA stores carry them.)

NEC will give you adapters for their monitors for the various
resolutions.

As for monitors, that's really a decision independent of hooking up
to a PB520--ie, get a good monitor for any system.

NEC has a solid reputation, has gotten good reviews many times, and
has a "value" line that's fairly inexpensive. I've also liked what
I've seen of Mag Innovision, and they're cheap.

Nanao and Sony (and Apple) have good quality monitors, but they tend
to be pretty expensive.

On a MS20 from Apple I get max 1024x768 pixels 4 bit 16 colors or grays in
VESA mode 60 Hz, for this to work you need to press the option key while
accessing the options in the monitot control-panel
as a small monitor I recommend the sony 15sf
as a big monitor either the Apple 20MS or a 20 inch Sony multisync

Hi PB-Net'sters,

I got a reply from Exchange Cable. Apparently they produce a cable with
a dip switch arrangement that enables the PB's connection to set the
resolution for various monitors. The product is called the Liberty and
costs $34.99 from MacMall (800) 222-2808. The part number for the liberty
is PN65748. Unless I hear otherwise, I will be ordering this cable.

I have a Sony 15sf ($439) hooked up to my PB520c and am getting 832x624, or
something like that. You need an adapter that generates the the correct codes
for the monitor. The store that you get the monitor from should have it ($20 - $40).
