520 modem problem

i have a 520 with sys 7.1 and a recently installed powerpoint mercury. I
have found that I can't print to my laserwriter unless I change the modem
setting under Powerbook Setup to "normal", and can't use the modem unless
I change it back to "compatible". Attempting to dialup using the normal
setting crashes the system.
