The carrier detect pin is not hooked up at all. I asked USR about this
and they told me to buy a new cable. This is not a big deal for users, but
for sysops, it's monumental.
The problem you are experiencing is also due to the cable. The
hardware handshake cable is cross-wired. For anyone that cares, the people
at USR said the cable is set up this way:
Mac function Mac pin DB-25 pin RS-232 function
------------ ------- --------- ---------------
RxD (receive) 5 3 receive data
TxD (transmit) 3 2 transmit data
Ground 4&8 7 Ground
HSKi 1 4&20 CTS & DTR
HSKo 2 5 RTS
I think this is the way it works. I am not sure about the last two
but it something close. I know the pinouts are correct, but I am not sure
about the rs-232 function.
In any case: it means that you need to do everything you can
to disable DTR and CD. This includes settings in programs, NVRAM, and dip
switches.
This works for me. I just set up my NVRAM to set up everything
correctly, and just let the programs initialize by giving atz which resets
the NVRAM settings. (NVRAM = non-volatile RAM)
It seems that you now have the DTR or data terminal ready enabled.
So, when the hardware handshake says stop data, it also pulls on the DTR
pin on the modem side, and hangs up. I think that's why it won't work.
The carrier detect is just a way for the modem to tell the computer
by hardware that the connection is down. This is crucial for sysops since
their modem are unattended, but not a big deal for people who just turn
off thier modem to reset it and hang up.
I think this is correct. My sources are USR and a paper by Maury
Markowitz of SoftArc (makers of FirstClass OIS (online info system) software).
If there is interest, I can post this paper. If others have comments, I
would love to discuss it.
Cheers,

It sounds like you're using hardware flow control (RTS/CTS), which uses the
DTR line on the Mac because its serial port has only 8 pins. You have to
tell the modem to ignore a change in DTR. Try AT&D0, if the "Mac&Fax"
follows the usual command conventions, or check the manual.
Also check your &Q[x] setting, which in combination with &D[x] tells the
modem what to do if there's a change in DTR. Most setting pairs make the
modem hang up if DTR is dropped.

You need to tell your modem to ignore DTR. Usually its AT&D0.

Dear netters:
Last week, when I ran a software, my screen was locked. So
I have to restart my system by turning it off and on again. The
strange thing is that icons for some of the softwares which was
open when the incident happened were all changed to a diamond
shape with a hand (I guess this is the system standard icon).
These softwares include Fetch, Tiger, Scanner, etc. I don't know
how to restore their original icons. Could anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I am really disappointed: as of issue 14 the develop quarterly journal does not include the develop cd. It contains the bookmark cd. Because of this I will no longer have access to Inside Mac in digital form, and to the system files.
For me, the online inside mac was one of the main reasons to subscribe. Caroline (Rose) writes the value of the software on the cd was too high. That may be so, but I think Apple should make the docs to the system software available to people. I like the on-line supplement to the books.
Is anyone else disappointed or pissed? It sure did spoil my day.
Greetings, mac gurus.
Another simple question (I hope). Having just bought a MAC plus,
I've just purchased a laser printer to go with it. The printer is
a RX7100 page printer that emulates an HP laserjet 2 etc. I'm having
one or two problems getting the MAC to talk to it. The only 'drives'
I have on the mac are 'laserwriter' and 'imagewriter'. What do I need
to get started ? What is appletalk ?? Help !
[Ignorant new user....]
Many thanks in advance.
Jamie.

I've heard that due to the large volume of complaints about this issue
the Inside Mac stacks will be going back onto the CD; however, the system
software will stay off.
You can try asking over on Comp.sys.mac.programmer for details.
