Just to let you know I have hardly any knowledge on Macs, however I am
improving slightly...
My friend's Mac crashed and burned, however data recovery is going to
cost them quoted at around.. $700 - $1500 smacks to retrieve and stick
on a USB. That's just plain stupid - or isn't it? Recovering data from
a PC is easy, with the IDE/Sata to USB cable... so...
I'm guessing the HDD of a Mac is different and isn't IDE/SATA? I doubt
it. But when quoted that much.. I'm assuming there is a major
procedure or equipment evolved. Lol.
So, are Mac HDD any different than out PCs? Data recovery for a Mac is
simply opening it, taking out the HDD, and extracting info like we
would a PC?
Thanks in advance!

Macs have used ATA/SATA drives for years. They are standard drives from
various manufacturers such as Hitachi, Seagate, etc. They are formatted
differently from drives used with Windows, so a Windows machine normally
cannot read a Mac-formatted hard drive. However, another Mac can.
You can get a Firewire or USB enclosure for the drive fairly cheap, then
hook it up to another Mac.
You may not even need that depending on the nature of the failure.
What model Mac is it? How hold? What was the nature of the failure?
Have you tried booting the machine from the software install CD?
If you have another Mac available, you can connect the two via Firewire,
start up the second machine, then try booting the failed machine in the
Target mode: hold down the T key while starting it up. If that works,
the hard drive of the defective machine will show up as a disk on the
second machine and you can transfer files to the second machine.
You can try other things as well, depending on the nature of the failure.
More information from you would enable Mac-savvy people to give you mare
targeted advice.
You could also take it to a Mac-authorized shop near you. Depending on
where you live, there may be an Apple store near you, or some other
Apple-authorized service place. Maybe there is a Mac USer Group in your
vicinity; the members would probably be willing to help.
