Some of the stuff I have read suggests it is built in but I can't find
any documentation.

I seem to recall it used to be part of mail, but I can't find that
either.

Is there some particular app I need to use?

Back when I thought RSS might be useful for me, I used a specialized
application called NetNewsWire, which was quite nice.

Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM
filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting
messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google
Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts.

Apple took RSS support out of Safari and Mail in Mountain Lion. You
will need to get a separate RSS reader app and add the feeds to that. I
use Reeder from the app store, but there are others.

To get the feeds you'll need to find an RSS/Atom link on the website.

Thanks. I'll get that. I'm not positive I even want any RSS feeds but
I need to find out.

There's a free reader called Vienna which some quite like. I tried it
for a bit when I was migrating from Netnewswire, but ended up with
Reeder.

And if you use Safari, I wrote a little extension that will do that part
for you. (Basically it just re-adds the "RSS" menu button to the toolbar
that used to be in Safari 5, but also lets you preview a feed in the
now-doomed Google Reader if you don't want to add it to your RSS app
straight away.)

You can grab it from <http://calum.me/safari>
