One way to do this is just click-drag the photo from the iTunes window
onto the desktop. This will create a clipping file of the picture that
you can open in other applications.

They aren't separate files.
Do one of two methods:
1. Go to Amazon.com, search under album/artist/song name when you find the
art along with the written description, click on "Larger picture" or
something like that. Sometimes, just clicking on the picture works. Drag
that over to the iTunes box in the lower left corner of the large iTunes
window, or drag to iTunes>File>GetInfo>Artwork.
2. Similar to above but with Google. Enter song/album title with Safari (or
any other browser via Google search) and select "Images". Look among what is
shown and do a similar copy when shown original art. The larger image files
are better.
Hope that helps.

The All music database can provide small thumbnails of album covers if
you want to insert them <http://www.allmusic.com/> just drag the picture
to the desktop. It'll give some weird number instead of a title but
renaming is no problem

It's an Applescript for iTunes that will export the artwork of selected
files into an album in iPhoto 5. Just what you want!
If you search the same site you should also find a script that'll put
the artwork as a seperate file into the folder containing the music file.
