me, again, this time with a mail issue. Running OS 10.6.8 and mail is version
4.6, on an imac. When I look for new mail, what is happening is nothing. The
progress window show retrieving 29 items or 372 items or any other peculiar
number - and then nothing shows up. I go to web mail and I see that I have 29
items in my mail, so I know that I am getting mail - it just isn't coming to
my computer via the mail program. This is an absolute puzzler to me, and I
don't have a clue where to look or even what kinds of things to look for. I
have not done any kind of twiddling with anything.

Did it work properly before?

If it did not ever work properly, sounds like the mail accounts are not
set up correctly in the Mail program. You need to set them up correctly.

If it did work properly before, what has changed? Either you changed
something, or it got corrupted somehow.

If you are sure you did not change anything, then maybe some corruption
has crept in. There are two basic ways to try to fix corruption:
1. Quit and relaunch the offending application program (Mail in this
case).
2. If that does not fix it, restart the computer.

You can of course go back and verify that the Mail program is set up
correctly: Mail >> Preferences

Make sure you know how Mail is supposed to work, its capabilities and
features. Maybe you changed how messages are viewed without realizing
you made the change.

If none of this helps, send more detail, or go to a friendly fellow Mac
user and get advice. If there is an Apple store nearby, you can make a
Genius bar appointment and get them to look at it. They will not charge
you to have a look and help you with it. The friendly Mac user or Apple
Store genius has to actually see and touch your computer to be able to
help, so you have to bring it to them or them to it.

Bill, thanks for your reply and thanks for thinking about my issue...

yes, it worked perfectly for as long as I have had this computer, maybe a
couple of years or so.

This is precisely why I posted my inquiry, wondering what had gotten
corrupted. I did not make any changes to my program.

I have done this a number of times, and the problem still is there.

I have done this, as well, and still the problem is there.

the program was set up correctly and working correctly, until suddenly it was
not working correctly.

it is not a matter of being unable to view the messages, it is the case that
they never get into my computer, at all.

this is a rural area, sparsely populated. I do not know any other mac users
nearby, even - except my wife, and she knows what I know. The nearest Mac
store is more than 200 miles away, so that is neither an option or a
resource.

Again, I thank you for taking the time to respond to my query.

Or your mail provider (ISP?) has changed something.

Go to Window > Connection Doctor. What colours are the dots next to
your mail accounts - green? If they aren't all green then click the
"Show Details" button. Click "Check Again".

Then if you're able, look through the text that appears in the details
panel and see if you can spot the problem. If not, can you post it
somewhere? IIRC it won't contain your passwords.

I just don't know what is going on! I have been looking at my e-mail via
webmail. Then I closed the web page and looked at my e-mail via the mail

changed anything, I have controlled no controls. I am flummoxed. I am also a
bit steamed with my service provider, but not because of this issue (though
maybe I ought to be)

Thanks for your response, Chris. I will keep your posting in mind, if the
issue crops up again.

The information in the connection doctor should be helpful if you need
to talk to your service provider about this. Fingers crossed that it
doesn't happen again, of course.
