Zippy is back!

twenty-year-old Apple Macintosh SE/30 I affectionately call Zippy is
back in service! = )
Zippy has 80 megabytes of RAM installed, and is currently running Mac OS
7.5.5. I've installed an Asante MacCon 10 megabit Ethernet card in the
SE/30 PDS expansion slot, giving Zippy full network connectivity. The
software serving this web page to you is MacHTTP 2.6. I use the
ultra-cool Sleeper utility to put the hard drive to sleep when it is not
in use.

What timing! Got there in time to see the show, and then the SE crashed,
saw the reboot screen, and then was able to load the enlarged image of a
gotee'd gent. That's you?
I so remember my SE/30. I splurged and got dual slots, so I had way more
memory (storage, that is) and flexibility than I could use at the time.
It was stolen in a burglary when it was still the bees' knees.

Yep, that's me.
Actually, it didn't crash. I just updated the web page and restarted it.

I'm so glad to still have mine. It was the first Mac my dad ever
purchased. My dad has since passed away, but we have lots of fond
memories with Zippy!

My first Mac (Jan 1990). I remember it fondly though I think it cost me
bout three grand when a dollar was worth a lot more than it is today.

Ain't that the truth. IIRC, I paid ca. $1200 for extra RAM..... Now that
amount of cash will buy many magnitudes more RAM.

I think I remember my dad quoting a figure close to $4500 for the Mac
SE/30, an ImageWriter, and some software!

Yes. The one in there now whines quite loudly (always has) while
spinning - so loud I can just barely hear it spin up with the closet
door closed. I was hoping to get a newer model that is less noisy and
will last longer. Unfortunately, it seems I'm out of luck - at least
for now. The 4 GB SCSI drive I was going to install doesn't have the
same 50-pin interface. So I guess I'll have to put the lowly, noisy
Quantum 700MB drive back in until I can find a suitable replacement. I
do have Sleeper installed, so the drive spins down when not in use. So I
think I will get lots of life out of it still. : )
